Region 1: Parents - Partners and Allies

By Rudy Escobar, Region 1 Director

We invest heavily in our education system, funding various initiatives and support within schools. However, we often overlook one of the most vital partners in education: parents, especially those of underserved children. Typically, schools communicate with parents to provide updates on their children's progress or to seek financial support. Yet, this should not be the only reason for parental involvement. Parents should be seen as partners, always striving for their children's best interests.

Developing parent advocate leaders is a valuable opportunity. These leaders can become allies who advocate for more science, STEM, and computer science in schools at school boards, school sites, and within their communities. Empowering parents to advocate for equitable quality education and relevant services for their children is extremely important. By doing so, we ensure that education is aligned with the world their children live in and bring much-needed resources to underserved communities.
