Strategic Investment in TK–12 Science: What It Is and Why It Matters

CASE’s new white paper makes the case for elevating science to the same priority as English Language Arts and math. Drawing on research, policy analysis, and stories from California schools, it shows how high-quality, hands-on science not only strengthens STEM learning but also improves literacy, math, language development, and student engagement.
Yet, access to science remains inequitable.
Too many students in low-income, rural, and multilingual communities are still excluded from rigorous science opportunities, shutting them out of future STEM pathways and limiting California’s workforce potential. The white paper calls for bold statewide action:
- Elevate science as a visible priority in schools and districts.
- Strengthen accountability systems to include science.
- Support and sustain California’s strong science education community.
When science is optional, equity is optional. Now is the time to invest in science as a driver of equity, student success, and California’s future.
