Region 4 Update

By: Debbie Gordon, CSTA Region 4 Director

Although school is back in session, and it is September, it is impossible to say that summer is over when the temperature is still in the 100s here in the southern California desert! But, here we are at the start of another year. Whether you come back to a classroom of first-grade grins, middle schoolers with brand new outfits and phones, high school young people ready to solve the world’s problems, or teachers waiting for you to lead, a new school year is always exciting. I hope yours is off to a great start.

An update for Region 4:
In August, the Orange County Office of Education hosted the Trainer of Trainers for CA NGSS Statewide Rollout around Environmental Literacy. Participants experienced the sessions to prepare for local trainings that will be taking place throughout the state. Learning how to frame NGSS with an environmental literacy lens engages students and makes instruction authentic and relevant by focusing on local environmental phenomena. The statewide rollout is a two-day professional learning geared toward grade K-12 academic coaches, administrators, curriculum leads, and teacher leaders. In our region, you can find trainings in Orange County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County, San Diego County, and Imperial County. Let me know of happenings at your school or district around NGSS so we can share in the successes of each other in future Region 4 Updates. Email me at dgordon@psusd.us.
